MY FELLOW LABORER is a very interesting short story or novella that is unique in that it was never published in the United Kingdom until over 100 years after it was written. Haggard's published biographers and bibliographers have very little to say about this novella. I do not understand why a work of fiction would go unnoticed and was seemingly neglected by Longmans, Haggard's main publisher.
McKay claims MY FELLOW LABORER was first "published serially in Collier's 'Once a Week,' New York, Vol. II, from Oct. 27 to Nov. 24, 1888."
McKay also mentions the first publication in book-form, a cheap paperback published in New York by George Munro on Nov. 30, 1888. This Munro paperback also includes a non-fiction article, THE WRECK OF THE COPELAND, which was first published in The Illustrated London News in the issue dated August 18, 1888. Haggard was on The Copeland when it wrecked on his way back to England from Iceland.
MY FELLOW LABORER was first published (along with THE WRECK OF THE COPELAND) in England in 1992 via a limited edition self-published by Chris Coquet.
