Regarding "first American editions," I totally ignore cheaply-made, pirated editions. Publishers in the USA, primarily prior to the International Copyright Act of 1891, published scads of pirated editions not worthy of mention on this website.

Before the International Copyright Act of 1891, in my opinion, only the Harper and Brothers editions are worth collecting. See the webpage Sets of HRH Books to see my copies of the Harpers editions shelved together.
