1929 - Mary of Marion Isle

McKay, Scott and Whatmore claim that Hutchinson and Company published its first edition in book-form of MARY OF MARION ISLE in London on January 4, 1929. According to McKay and Scott, 3,500 copies were printed, but Whatmore claims 8,000 is the number of copies. Nevertheless, the first edition is without illustrations, but with ads at the end of the book dated Autumn 1928.

Higgins claims that Hutchinson paid £300 ($25,000 in 2020 dollars) for the serial rights (no serialization was undertaken), and £700 ($60,000 in 2020 dollars) was advanced for publication in book-form.

Doubleday, Doran and Company published the first edition in book-form in New York on May 17, 1929. McKay and Scott both agree on the New York publication date, and claim that 3,500 copies comprise the first printing. There are no illustrations, nor ads at the end of the book.

The Ryerson Press published the first edition in Canada, likely also in 1929.

I do not own any of the books pictured below, unless noted. I do own copies of both the British and American first editions.
