HEU-HEU, or The Monster
According to McKay, Scott, and Whatmore, the first appearance of HEU-HEU was as an abridged serialization, published in Hutchinson's Magazine in 3 parts: January through March 1924, without illustrations. According to Higgins, Hutchinson's did not like the story when they received the manuscript.
Whatmore claims that Hutchinson and Company published the first edition in book-form in London on January 25, 1924, while McKay and Scott place the date 4 days later on January 29. Apparently, 10,000 copies were printed, without illustrations, with ads at the end of the book dated Spring 1924.
Higgins claims that Hutchinson paid £800 ($68,000 in 2020 dollars) for the serial rights, and £800 was advanced for publication in book-form.
Doubleday, Page and Company published the first edition in book-form in New York on April 4, 1924. McKay, Scott and Whatmore all agree on the New York publication date, and McKay and Scott claim that 7,500 copies comprise the first printing. There are no illustrations, nor ads at the end of the book.
The Ryerson Press published the first edition in Canada, likely also in 1924.
Grosset and Dunlap reprinted this title in America.
I do not own any of the books pictured below, unless noted. I do own copies of both the British and American first editions.
